CRITERIA FOR AWARD THE INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER 2019

The International Festival of Theatre Schools SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER

● Within the non-competitive festival SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER 2019, the individual artistic achievement of a student may be recognized with one of these following awards: The MARTA award, The SWAG of SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER and The Award of The Festival Director.

● The MARTA Award and The SWAG of SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER are awarded within the authority and responsibility of The Festival Jury.

● The Core Organising Team nominates potential members of The Professional Part of the Jury to the Festival Board. The Festival Board then selects on the basis of special qualities, a field of study and professional focus, ethnic and gender diversity and balance.

● As for the members of the Student Part of The Jury, the Core Organising Team presents a list of candidates in order of their preference to the Festival Board. The Festival Board select on the basis of special qualities, a field of study and future professional focus, ethnic and gender diversity and balance.

● There are four students and four professionals on the Jury, including at least one student representative and one professional representative of a Czech institution.

● The Jury will be appointed by The Dean of The Theatre Faculty of The Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Brno according to the proposal from the Festival Board.

● The Jury will select a chairman at their first meeting.

● The Jury consists of foreign and domestic professionals with a theatre or education background. Individuals in a labor-law relationship with at least one of the schools taking part in the main festival program cannot be members of The Jury. During the festival week, together The Jury will attend all the shows of the Main program. On the last day of the festival, The Jury, after a discussion behind closed doors, decides on the awards. The Jury will announce its decisions to the Festival Director.

● The final decision about awards is reserved for the Festival Jury.

● Awards are commemorated with a statuette and a diploma signed by The Dean of The Theatre Faculty of The Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Brno, The Festival Director and The Chairman of The Jury. Awards are presented during the Closing Ceremony.

MARTA Award

1. The MARTA Awards are the awards of the non-competitive International Festival of Theatre Schools SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER. These awards are not for ranking individual performances within the main festival program, but for highlighting inspiring and breakthrough contributions from young thespians.

2. Awards are an expression of appreciation of extraordinary contributions from students involved in performances on the main program. Instructors or theatre professionals cannot obtain these awards. The organizing team will prepare relevant information for The Jury. The team will provide The Jury with detailed information concerning the role of a particular student in a production team on request.

3. These awards are tied to the individual artistic achievements of particular students. Awards cannot be given to a group of students.

4. The Jury can make up to  four awards in the following categories:

● Direction

● Scenography

● Outstanding Actress

● Outstanding Actor

● Dramaturgy

● Scenic music

● Screenwriting

● Light Design

● Choreography

● Costumes

5. In extraordinary cases, multiple prizes can be given within one category.

The SWAG of SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER

The Student Part of The Jury awards The SWAG of SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER award. This award is presented for the original use of unconventional staging resources, or for originality or a distinctive generational statement dealing with current cultural, social, political and ethical topics. The Student Part of The Jury can present only one SWAG of SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER Award. This award is tied to the individual artistic achievement of one student. Instructors or theatre professionals cannot be given this award.

The Award of the Festival Director

The Director of the Festival has the right to award a The Award of the Festival Director at his discretion. The director’s opinion is independent, can differ from the opinion of the Jury, and is not tied to the above-mentioned individual categories. The festival director is not obliged to award this prize.


Statute and Rules of Procedure of The Jury of the International Festival of Theatre Schools SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER

Members of The Jury

  1. The Jury is an indivisible part of The Festival SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER. The Jury has the right to award extraordinary acts of young theatre creators. The Jury consists of The Professional Part of The Jury and The Student Part of The Jury.

  2. The Professional Part of The Jury consists of foreign and domestic experts in the performing arts or theatre education.

  3. The Student Part of The Jury as well comprises foreign and domestic students of theatre academies or other higher education institutions with a focus on theatre.

    1. The number of applicants from one school is not limited.

    2. Candidate must be a student of a master's or doctoral degree programme.

  4. The suggestions for The Professional Part of The Jury are made by The Core Organising Team and presented to the Festival Board. The Festival Board selects from the candidates on the basis of special qualities, studied field and profession focus, ethnic and gender diversity and balance.

  5. For the selection of members of The Student Part of The Jury, the Core Organising Team presents the list of candidates in order to their qualities to the Festival Board. The Festival Board selects from the candidates on the basis of special qualities, a field of study and future profession focus, ethnic and gender diversity and balance.

  6. The ratio of student and professional members is set to four representatives from each group.

At least one representative of The Student Part of The Jury and one representative of The Professional Part of The Jury is a representative of a Czech institution.

  1. The Jury will be appointed by the Dean of the Theatre Faculty of Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Brno on the basis of the proposal of The Festival Board.

  2. Members of the Jury cannot be:

    1. Individuals in the labor-law relationship with at least one of the schools taking part in the main festival program students of schools taking part in the Main festival programme.

  3. Members of the Jury are paid subsistence expenses and have free admission to the Festival performances.

  4. The Jury is obliged to see all the performances of the main Festival programme. For this purpose, the organizational team plans the so-called "Jury’s Path” within the festival main programme. They have to participate in the Opening and Closing Ceremony as well. Members of The Student Part of The Jury should also participate in discussions as well as in off-programme activities.

  5. The Festival Jury will meet on the first festival day with The Festival Director at the opening meeting. The Jury is obliged to decide about the awards on the base of the expert discussion and to inform The Festival Director about the nominees at the final meeting on the last festival day.

  6. The Professional Part of The Jury can present up to four MARTA Awards.

  7. The Student Part of The Jury presents one The SWAG of SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER Award.

  8. Further details are regulated by the Criteria for Awards.

Administration

The Chairman of the Jury

  1. The Chairman of the Jury is appointed by The Festival Board.

  2. The Chairman is selected from The Professional Part of The Jury.

If the Jury does not reach a consensus, then voting takes place. If the decision results in a draw, then the Chairman's vote will be the decisive vote.
